SALISBURY SUITE CONCERT

On the 10th March, due to the generosity of Rev. James Tomkins in allowing St. Dunstan’s Church to be used  by  David and Paula Jenkins for one of  the first concerts of the recently composed Salisbury Suite in the beautiful 13th Century Church.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening for those attending and my thanks go to David and Paula for their inspirational use of music, poetry, words and song which inspired all those who attended.

My thanks also to all who helped in any way to ensure this evening was a success and each of the Churches benefitted by £245.   Our half has benefitted our Organ Fund.

David and Paula will give further concerts within the area during this year and I would strongly recommend if you were unable to attend in March that you make every effort to attend at a future date.  - Pam Scott.

The Salisbury Suite

When ministers are sent to their first appointment it can often be a surprise. I was sent to be a minister in the Salisbury Circuit. It was a time of considerable fulfilment. All the years of studying and preparing had come together in the beginning of my life’s work.

It was a fulfilling time as a family too when my children were born.

Salisbury itself is a place that is so beautiful that, whenever I return, its astonishing grandeur makes a considerable impact that is both relaxing and exciting.

Two years ago we had arranged to visit Arundells, the former home of Sir Edward Heath, and I had asked if I might play his piano when we visited. The people on the tour and the staff were extraordinarily appreciative of what I played, and I was asked to return later in the year and give a concert for all the staff. This time I composed a piece especially for them about the house and called “Arundells”. Again the level of appreciation was very encouraging.

I then began to work on putting together some pieces I had composed when I had lived in the city and ones which I was composing afresh to describe a journey from the place where I had first lived in the city (Harnham) towards the cathedral. “The Salisbury Suite” was composed and recorded and given its world premiere at Arundells last year.

This year Paula and I are embarking on a series of concerts around the country. We are particularly thrilled that one of them will be at the Salisbury International Arts Festival and another at the Aylesbury Festival.

The series of concerts began locally at St. Dunstan’s, Monks Risborough on Saturday 10 March at 7pm. Money raised will towards both St. Dunstan’s and our own church’s organ fund.

Paula and I are very grateful to Pam Scott, Pat Kimber and to Rev. James Tomkins for all their support in making this first concert possible.

We hope you will enjoy seeing photos of the journey projected onto a screen and will enjoy listening to appropriate poetry and descriptions, as well as some well known classics to which i have set words describing the journey and, of course, to the music of “The Salisbury Suite” itself.

Womens World Day of Prayer 2nd March 2012 …

"Let Justice Prevail"

Women from nearly all the churches in Risborough gathered together for this service at the Baptist Church and our leader was Laura Dun, a member of the Baptist Church who works for Wycliffe Bible Translators. We began the service with a procession of candles brought in by representatives from each of the churches, which were then placed in a circle on the table at the front of the church. The candles were brightly and differently coloured to represent the diversity of Malaysia and symbolised that we are all equal in God's eyes.

As the service progressed, we learned more about the diverse population of Malaysia and the challenges this brings. The women of Malaysia who prepared the service, prayed that all religions, races and ethnic groups would work together for tolerance and harmony with fair and just governance for all.

Gill Taylor, a layperson from St Mary's and wife of the Curate, Jim Taylor, provided the talk at the heart of the service. She began by saying that generally we are all far too "nice" - nice is not a word mentioned in the bible. Instead, sometimes we need to get angry, just as God gets angry - angry enough to take action against the injustices of this world.

Black paper chains were hung in the church and at the end of the service, Laura cut the chains to symbolise that our prayers are powerful in releasing people from their 'chains' whatever they may be.

We joined together for refreshments in the upper hall afterwards, where John Vickery provided a Fairtrade Stall. It was lovely to see so many ladies from our own congregation, many of whom joined in the service with readings. We are also very grateful to our very own Peter Willett for providing the musical accompaniment.

The offertory raised over £260 for the work of the Women's World Day of Prayer.

Fund Raising

The library of books and jigsaw puzzles in the Church Porch is proving popular.    Items may be borrowed for £1.  If you have any good books or puzzles that you think others may enjoy then please bring them along.  Also look at the greetings cards (30p) and tags (10p) together with the lovely decorative Crosses which Lorraine Brady made. Also note that men’s and children’s birthday cards, Get Well and New Home cards are needed to recycle into new cards!

PR festival stall 2011

On 9th July the fund raising group had a very successful afternoon at the Princes Risborough Street Fayre. We were blessed with a dry and sunny day and a lot of people were out enjoying the weather and the festival atmosphere.

The stall had an adult and a childrens’ tombola and raised £200 that will be shared between the church's 3 chosen charities.

The Junior Church sold cakes for the Karibuni Trust, raising £69. The Karibuni Trust provides support to children who live in the streets and slums of Kenya. Our Junior Church children have recently sent some messages to a trust funded school in Mombasa and we hope to build up a 'pen pal' relationship with some of the children there.
