GOD IN LOVE UNITES US: The Report of the Marriage and Relationships Task Group 2019

NOTICE FROM SUPERINTENDENT

As many of you will be aware from Circuit Meeting, the conference report on Marriage and Relationships has now been published and is available along with a study guide through the Methodist Church website.

The district has organised some days to talk about the report for anyone who is interested. We will be doing something in Circuit as well.
The District dates are are:

Oct 16th at Marlborough Road Methodist Church
Nov 23rd at Newton Longville Methodist Church
JAN 8TH at The Avenue Methodist Church High Wycombe
Feb 8th Birstall Methodist Church Leicester]

Each day is from 10.30 till 3 and you are asked to take your own lunch

I need to stress that this is Provisional Legislation which means it comes to Synod to vote (it can and should be talked about at Church Council and Circuit Meeting).
It can be approved, defeated or amended.
When these reports come, they take a view which the church is asked to express its thoughts on. For some the view it takes will be challenging but it has to take a view in order to have a meaningful vote. I hope, therefore, that the advertised sessions will offer a variety of views about the recommendations

There are other responses out there from those in favour and those opposed. I have a copy of the MET (Methodist Evangelicals Together) offering an alternative view to the report. There are also, I think, responses from those in favour of the recommendations but I have not managed to acquire any of these

I repeat what I said at Circuit Meeting that as with the Conference discussion, we need to do this well, listen to contrary convictions, and try to remember that what unites is far more important that the outcome of these conversations. It is important to remember that if the report is approved, churches and clergy will have the right to decide based on conscious. Nothing will be imposed from on high, this is not our way

Thanks
Richard

NB. The reports mention above can be downloaded. the resolutions from a very long report have been extracted and added as an additional document.
